Written Assignment

pencilsPart 5 of Organizational Profile - Personnel Recruitment and Selection

1. Analyze the processes used by your organization in the recruitment of employees and/or volunteers.

  1. Begin with the vacancy announcement or job posting and end your discussion with the closing of the recruitment process.
  2. Include such things as choice of recruitment methods and techniques, any use of targeted recruitment, etc., and the rationale your organization is using in its recruitment efforts.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of your organization's recruitment efforts. (Consider such issues as return on investment [time, effort and cost], number of applicants vs. anticipated and existing openings, EEO / AA issues, etc.).
  4. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the recruitment process as it exists.
  5. Make two recommendations to improve your agency's effectiveness in recruitment. Support your recommendations and demonstrate how they would likely add value to the recruitment effort.

2. Also, analyze the selection processes used by your organization.

  1. Begin with the receipt of applications and conclude with the job offer to the successful candidate(s). Consider such things as the use of different selection tests (i.e. agility, written, oral interviews, etc.) and how they are weighted in the final decision(s).
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of your organization's selection procedures. (Consider such issues as return on investment [time, effort and cost), number of successful candidates (those passing the examinations short of the interview) vs. anticipated and existing openings, EEO/AA issues, etc.).
  3. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the selection process as it exists.
  4. Make two recommendations to improve your agency's effectiveness in the selection process. Support your recommendations and demonstrate how they would likely add value to the selection effort.

You are expected to backup your opinion with sources. You should be prepared to cite approximately 3-5 sources. Be sure to credit all sources. The length of this assignment will vary depending on the type of department you are analyzing and how succinctly you can make your points. The assignment should be somewhere in the range of 5-7 pages. You can visit Diana Hacker's Research and Documentation Online at http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/ to find complete examples of how to cite sources.
