Volunteers
Selecting Volunteers
![]()
Fires do not ask if the firefighter is career or volunteer. Subjects in need of emergency medical assistance do not ask is the First Responder or EMT or paramedic is career or volunteer. Most volunteer departments do not require the full sequence of testing (from written to physical agility, to interview(s), background and medical, etc.). While not all may be practical, they would be desirable. You want your volunteers able, healthy, and of good character not only in regard to their ability to perform but also to protect your department from potential liabilities (negligent recruitment, "hiring, " assignment, etc.).
Generally speaking, the same considerations already identified would apply to the use of the various selection tools in selecting volunteers. While an orientation and realistic job preview are critical for both career and volunteer candidates, it perhaps is more critical for the volunteers. Prospective members must be made aware of their obligations, responsibilities, and time commitments prior to testing and/or joining.
