Written Assignment
Part 3 of Organizational Profile - Motivation
While these items will be discussed in greater detail later in the course, think about your department's personnel management system and the "motivators" therein.
- How do the personnel management functions and your organizational culture contribute to the satisfaction of Maslow's needs (and, potentially to motivation)? Consider such issues as selection, promotion, compensation and benefits, performance appraisal, and employee and labor relations. Relate your departmental practices, policies, and culture in these arenas to each of the five needs as is appropriate.
- What "theories of motivation" are evidenced in your department's daily activities? In each case, explain how the theory is demonstrated.
- Make two suggestions to improve motivation and explain why you would recommend those.
You are expected to backup your opinion with sources. You should be prepared to cite approximately 3-5 sources. Be sure to credit all sources. The length of this assignment will vary depending on the type of department you are analyzing and how succinctly you can make your points. The assignment should be somewhere in the range of 5-7 pages. You can visit Diana Hacker's Research and Documentation Online at http://www.dianahacker.com/resdoc/ to find complete examples of how to cite sources.
