Discussion: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Motivators, and De-motivators

Katrina workers discuss plan of action.

Discuss

There are three questions involved in this discussion. Respond to each. Begin by identifying your affiliation (department /agency) and type of agency (career, volunteer, or combination).

  1. Are there different motivators and de-motivators for those in career departments and those in all volunteer departments? If so, what are the differences and why do they exist? Include in your discussion what you believe to be the three most important motivators and three most important de-motivators in each department type.
  2. Are there different motivators and de-motivators for those in the different emergency services (fire service, EMS providers, and law enforcement)? If so, what do you believe to be the differences and why might they exist?
  3. As a supervisor, what specific motivational strategies (cite two or three) have you employed in motivating your people? Were they successful? Why or why not?

If you do not currently hold a supervisory position, assume that you are one in your organization.
